To My Husband on Fathers Day

Happy (belated) Fathers Day! We had a great weekend relaxing, laughing, watching basketball and spending time together. I hope Wes felt loved and appreciated on his special day. Wes really is an amazing father. I always knew he would be even in the beginning of our relationship.
A huge thing that makes Wes a great father is that he's a great husband. I don't want to judge anyone else's relationship or parenting arrangement, but I've too often seen husbands that leave the majority of parenting to their wives. Parenting is hard, and everyone needs a break. It hurts my heart to see a tired women wrangling her kids from sun up to sun down while the man essentially does is own thing. And the kids! They feel that alienation from their father. Luckily Wes knows me and knows that I expect nothing less than an egalitarian marriage and parenting arrangement. I may be a stay-at-home mom, but we both realize the importance of parenting together.
The best time of day is when Wes gets home from work. Wes and Seeley are off and playing. He loves that girl so much and she's crazy about him. They wrestle, read, have tea parties, the works. I am the luckiest women in the world to have this man in my life.

My Husband

This weekend Wes and I decided to have a little valentine's date without the little one. Seeley got to play with her great uncle John and aunt Shanti (those three are great together ;)) while Wes and I got to spend some quality time together! It's easy to put romance on the back burner when you have work, kids, bills, chores, etc. to worry about. Not to mention when you've been with someone over eight years. But it is important to always work on your relationship, and Wes and I were way overdue for a date. I must say, Wes is such a sweet, handsome and loving guy. He told me how pretty I looked every five minutes, he had his arm around me all night, and we laughed like we did when we first started dating. He definitely has my heart.

Wes Turns 30!

This past Sunday Wes turned thirty years old. I've been bugging him for weeks to tell me if he wanted to go anywhere, wanted a certain gift or anything. The responses were mostly "Hmmmm, I don't know. Whatever." We seem to be alike in that the best celebrations are laid back and involve spending time relaxing with loved ones. We ended up going out for afternoon drinks while my uncle and his fiancĂ© watched Seeley. I can't explain how we got so lucky, but Seeley has very little to no separation anxiety. I would have thought it would be the opposite way with me being a stay-at-home mom but, I'll take it! We had so much fun and Seeley did as well. She ran around outside the whole time and splashed in her very own little pool. Wes and I found a great little restaurant and were able to eat and drink without having to get up every five minutes to walk around and "explore". Sounds like a good birthday to me!!
With a birthday on Cinco De Mayo you have to have at least one Corona!

Birthday boy :)

Time for some fun!

One of the great house-turned-restaurants in PDX.

Shade and beer.

Lounging without the baby!

Checking things out!

And yummy food too!

Birthday Bloody Marys for the birthday boy.

What can I say. I love him!

Happy birthday Wes! You are loved.

Date Night!

Wes and I had a little date last night while my mom watched Seeley. It was nice and made me realize that I'm with Seeley every second of the day! I literally am with her 24/7! So it was nice to do my nails and go out without worrying about little girl. I'm still warming up to the idea of babysitting on a regular basis, though. We have great people to leave the baby with; I'm just not quite ready to be away from her for more than a couple hours. As far as Seeley's concerned, she's so social she probably enjoys being with new people once and a while! Enjoy some pics from our little date :)
We hit up the newly opened Sasquatch Brewery a couple blocks from our house in Hillsdale.

It's super nice and cute inside.

cheers!

That husband.

Brew brew brew!

We had the first batch of a new IPA!

Happy Anniversary!!

This will be a short post today. Just long enough to say happy anniversary (dating, not marriage) to my Wes. I love you very much. Best six years ever.

Not Keeping Score

Seeley woke up early on Saturday morning. Wes and I were both tired. Thus began the standoff. Neither of us wanted to aknowledge that the baby had woken us up in the hopes that the other would get up with the baby. Finally, when Seeley was at maximum squirminess, we broke. "Why do have to get up with her?" " Well why do I have to?"
It's embarrasing to say that we've had more than one of these conversations. Whether it's about getting up, changing diapers, walking her around the house when she's fussy; we've done the thing parents should NEVER do. We've been keeping score. Keeping score is easy to do but completely counterproductive. I can say that I spend more time with the baby during the day and therefore deserve more of a break when Wes gets home. He can say that he works hard at his job all day and gets up very early and therefore deserves more of a break. We do different things but we both are working hard to live the life we want and give the best to Seeley.
The thing about parenthood that's difficult isn't the baby. It's balancing everything around the baby. Seeley makes the schedule in our house and sometimes it's difficult to get up and do what needs to be done. Wes and I know that we both parent equally. After a cup or two of strong coffee we agreed that we need to stop keeping score. Hopefully through honest communication (we've been really good about asking for breaks) the keeping score will go away:)

A Note to Wes From His Crazy Wife

I had a rough, and I mean rough day today. Wes usually ends up having to hear my rants and more than once I've decided everything is somehow his fault. At the beginning of the day I was tired, moody and snippy and by the end of the day I was, well, tired, moody and snippy. He always seems to stick with me though and provide fantastic support. I thought I should make a little thank you list since he probably doesn't hear it enough:)

1) Thank you for taking one for the team when I complain about not being comfortable than immediately shove 100 pillows in your face and force you to move to the edge of the bed.
2) Thank you for telling me you think I'm pretty.
3) Thank you for taking me out to fancy dinners when I know you'd be just as happy at home with a Pabst.
4) Thank you for keeping your mouth shut when I eat disgusting amounts of food while giving you a look that just dares you to say something.
5) Thank you for encouraging me to write and for trying to understand poetry.
6) Thank you for going to all the midwives appointments with me.
7) Thank you for hugging me when I tell you I'm too tired to function and burst into tears.
8) Thank you for being so excited about the baby.
9) Thank you for putting up with the moments when we "have to" listen to Beyonce or watch Sex and the City.
10) Thank you for being you.
Wes took me out to a yummy meal last night at My Thai Bistro to cheer me up. And guess what? It did.

Marriage Changes Everything: Really?

When Wes and I got married I cried like a baby. I thought I'd be cool, calm and collected. No big deal, just thowing a party with an awesome dress. But when I saw Wes and everyone we love and when we said our vows holding eachother's sweaty hands, I lost it. Having a wedding of your own is amazing and everyone who wants one deserves one. And guess what? After the wedding you get to be married!

Marriage has deep roots yet it's new to each person experiencing it. In my experience I've always heard that marriage will change your relationship. That going from boyfriend and girlfriend to husband and wife will somehow alter every aspect of your current relationship and identity.

The day after Wes' and my wedding we ate leftovers. Maybe we watched a movie. I respect marriage, but to me the idea that getting married changes your relationship seems a bit outdated. If your relationship is unequal or tense or you don't trust your partner, your marriage will be a continuation of these problems. Unfortunately, a lot of people seem to think that marriage means that all problems will solve themselves simply because you've made a legally binding agreement not to break up. But no one's ever said "I love you because we're married." In the same vain, if you have an amazing, trusting and passionate relationship than your marriage will be all of those great things. I don't necessarily think being legally married will make your relationship more amazing, trusting or passionate.

I think the idea of marriage changing relationships stems from two interwoven ideas. In the past people saved sex, living together and long-term partnerships until marriage. Everything really did change when you went from just going on dates to living together, making long term decisions and developing a sexual relationship. Today, many of my friends have been or are in long term, commited relationships and are not married. They live with their partners, make long term decisions together, for all practical purposes they were/are married! Yet if I told them that they would probably freak out! The changes that came with marriage in the past and the potentially smooth or nonexistant transition into marriage today have been largely ignored or downplayed.

Second, for some people marriage equals expectations. The stereotype is that all women do this but really some do, some don't. For these women (and men) marriage can equal babies or increased income or a stricter sense of codependence. Expectations can be okay. A lot of people have religious beliefs that prevent them from having sex and therefore children before marriage as well as guidelines for married couples. If you and your spouse believe in those things: awesome. I respect your choices and commitment. The problem occurs when these things are expected without any discussion with your spouse. Marriage will definitely change things when it comes with a to-do list.

The idea of marriage as a theory and marriage as a practice are completely different things. I always get asked "what's it like to be married?" and I always respond "no different than before". Wes didn't become a two-headed monster nor did he become Prince Charming. People sometimes call me by Wes' last name even though I kept my last name. I got a gorgeous ring out of it. I have to contridict myself, though. Somehow, somewhere, something did change a little bit. The memory of saying our vows to one another has stayed with me. Our fights don't seem to last as long (I end up thinking, "screw it. You're going to leave your crap everywhere for the REST OF MY LIFE!") I feel more protected. Not that I can't protect myself, I can just feel that Wes really loves me and wants me around.
So, if you want to get marry your partner (and are fortunate enough to legally be able to) than do it. If you don't want to get married, don't. The only thing that matters is the love you have for yourself and your partner. Because that won't change.

Date Night!

Even though I'm still sick and can't really breathe, taste or smell, we figured we should have one last "date night" before the baby comes. Of course we went to Hopworks Urban Brewery. The food here is out of control amaaazing. Their black bean burger is made by them (don't you hate when resturants just heat up grocery store veggie patties? Gross.) They have burgers and salads and pizza and almost all their food is local and organic. Their beer is also organic and delicious. The smell of hops in that place makes me really start counting down to the birth! If you visit Portland, or live here and have never been, go to Hopworks immediatly!
